{"id":6638,"date":"2025-05-23T11:25:48","date_gmt":"2025-05-23T11:25:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/indpuls.tech\/en\/blog\/\/"},"modified":"2025-05-23T11:53:59","modified_gmt":"2025-05-23T11:53:59","slug":"sustainability-and-ai-driven-digitalization-at-celsa-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/indpuls.tech\/en\/blog\/sustainability-and-ai-driven-digitalization-at-celsa-group\/","title":{"rendered":"Sustainability and AI-Driven Digitalization for a Circular Industry at Celsa Group"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"omt-prose-container wp-block-omt-prose-container\">\n\n\t<div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>As part of <strong>INDPULS<\/strong>&#8216;s commitment to the digital and sustainable transformation of the industrial sector, we visited the Barcelona plant of one of our key partners: <strong>Celsa Group<\/strong>, the European leader in low-emission circular steel production.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/celsagroup.com\">Celsa<\/a> is the largest European producer of <strong>circular economy steel and operates the continent\u2019s most extensive circular supply chain.<\/strong> Its model is based on recycling ferrous scrap using electric arc furnaces, currently the <strong>most sustainable and energy-efficient<\/strong> method for steel production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group consists of various business units and a broad network of facilities including steel mills, rolling mills, recycling plants (circular hubs), and processing and distribution companies. This structure allows Celsa to directly and indirectly employ over <strong>10,000 professionals across Europe, including 4,544 in Spain.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:11px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-font-size-xl-font-size\"><strong>Climate Strategy and Sustainable Goals<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Celsa actively addresses two of the 21st century\u2019s key systemic challenges: resource scarcity and climate change. To that end, the company has set long-term strategic goals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><li data-start=\"1163\" data-end=\"1202\" style=\"white-space: normal; caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><p data-start=\"1165\" data-end=\"1202\"><strong>Reduce CO\u2082 emissions by 50%<\/strong> by 2030<\/p><\/li><br><li data-start=\"1163\" data-end=\"1202\" style=\"white-space: normal; caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><p data-start=\"1165\" data-end=\"1202\">Achieve <strong>98% circularity <\/strong>in its processes by the same year<\/p><\/li><br><li data-start=\"1163\" data-end=\"1202\" style=\"white-space: normal; caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><p data-start=\"1165\" data-end=\"1202\">Become a <strong>Net Positive, zero-waste company by 2050<\/strong>, fully closing its circular cycle<\/p><\/li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-font-size-xl-font-size\"><strong>Innovation as a Driver of Change<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Anna Casals<\/strong>, Director of Innovation for CELSA Group in Spain and France, presented Celsa\u2019s innovation strategy, which aligns with its <strong>Net Positive<\/strong> vision and is built around four key pillars: <strong>energy and emissions, circularity, people, and digitalization<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div\n\tclass=\"omt-image-content wp-block-omt-image-content\"\t>\n\n\t<div class=\"omt-image-content__wrapper\">\n\t\t<div class=\"omt-image-content__img-block\">\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"801\" src=\"https:\/\/indpuls.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/anna-casals-innovacion-celsa-indpuls-e1747909445691.jpg\" class=\"omt-image-content__img\" alt=\"anna-casals-innovaci\u00f3n-celsa-indpuls\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"omt-image-content__deatils-block\">\n\t\t\t<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1679\" data-end=\"1854\">\n<p data-start=\"1681\" data-end=\"1854\"><strong data-start=\"1681\" data-end=\"1706\">Energy and Emissions:<\/strong> Enhancing energy efficiency, integrating renewable energy sources, and developing and using alternative fuels such as green hydrogen and biochar.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1855\" data-end=\"1981\">\n<p data-start=\"1857\" data-end=\"1981\"><strong data-start=\"1857\" data-end=\"1873\">Circularity:<\/strong> Optimizing scrap handling and developing new circular business models focused on steel and related areas.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1982\" data-end=\"2115\">\n<p data-start=\"1984\" data-end=\"2115\"><strong data-start=\"1984\" data-end=\"1995\">People:<\/strong> The human factor is essential. All innovation initiatives originate from talent and cross-disciplinary collaboration.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Digitalization:<\/strong>\u00a0Leveraging artificial intelligence, advanced simulation, and digital twins to enhance processes, traceability, and develop digital product passports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div\n\tclass=\"omt-qoute wp-block-omt-qoute\"\t>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"omt-qoute__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"omt-qoute__deatils-block\">\n\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAt Celsa, digitalization is conceived as a strategic tool for competitiveness\u2014not as an end in itself.\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Accordingly, Celsa\u2019s Innovation Department promotes multiple initiatives based on <strong>artificial intelligence and digital twins,<\/strong> using them as key tools to predict and optimize industrial consumption. This was previously discussed in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/indpuls.tech\/blog\/artificial-intelligence-oleguer-sagarra\/\">Artificial Intelligence Applied to Industry 4.0, by Dr. Oleguer Sagarra (DRIBIA)<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most notable success stories is the\u00a0<strong>DAIMA Project<\/strong>, led by <strong>Juanjo Luna<\/strong>, Enterprise IT Architect at CELSA, and developed in collaboration with <strong>DRIBIA<\/strong>. By applying advanced AI techniques, they created a highly effective model for automatic scrap classification. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div\n\tclass=\"omt-image-content wp-block-omt-image-content\"\t>\n\n\t<div class=\"omt-image-content__wrapper\">\n\t\t<div class=\"omt-image-content__img-block\">\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/indpuls.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/POL-COLOMER-DRIBIA-IA-INDPULS.jpg\" class=\"omt-image-content__img\" alt=\"POL-COLOMER-DRIBIA-IA-INDPULS\" srcset=\"https:\/\/indpuls.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/POL-COLOMER-DRIBIA-IA-INDPULS.jpg 800w, https:\/\/indpuls.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/POL-COLOMER-DRIBIA-IA-INDPULS-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/indpuls.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/POL-COLOMER-DRIBIA-IA-INDPULS-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/indpuls.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/POL-COLOMER-DRIBIA-IA-INDPULS-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/indpuls.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/POL-COLOMER-DRIBIA-IA-INDPULS-390x390.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"omt-image-content__deatils-block\">\n\t\t\t<p><strong>Pol Colomer<\/strong>, co-CEO of DRIBIA, and <strong>Antonio Lozano<\/strong>, Data Science Manager, provided a detailed overview of the AI architecture used in the project, highlighting key learnings and the benefits this type of solution brings in terms of safety, automation, bias prevention, and claim reduction.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:11px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-font-size-xl-font-size\"><strong>Innovating Through Networks: A Paradigm Shift<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the visit to the Celsa Barcelona plant, we were joined by representatives of INDPULS partner companies and affiliates, as well as strategic expert and current president of Sarah Marlex, <strong>Xavier Marcet<\/strong>. In his talk, Marcet stated that\u00a0\u201cInnovation requires a new way of thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div\n\tclass=\"omt-qoute wp-block-omt-qoute\"\t>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"omt-qoute__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"omt-qoute__deatils-block\">\n\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn today\u2019s world, networks outperform individual nodes, and the most impactful innovation happens in shared spaces.\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In this context, he recommended the book\u00a0<em>&#8220;Cascades: How to Create a Movement that Drives Transformational Change&#8221;<\/em>by Greg Satell, co-founder of ChangeOS.
