INDPULS at the MIT Media Lab Immersion Session: key insights for the future of innovation
This April, Barcelona hosted a new edition of the international sessions promoted by the MIT Media Lab, aimed at bringing its research and transformative capabilities closer to local innovation ecosystems.
After being held in cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Taipei, Seoul, Bangkok, Abu Dhabi, and Mountain View (California), the event at the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau in Barcelona brought together members of the MIT Media Lab, alumni, and collaboration-driven organizations to share interdisciplinary projects with real impact in areas such as everyday life, health, and well-being.
As INDPULS, we were there. Attending was an opportunity to discover a new way of understanding innovation and to engage with the Media Lab’s experimental and radically interdisciplinary approach. Everything encouraged us to think differently.
The session introduced new ways of approaching innovation, from the convergence of disciplines to the role of emerging technologies as tools to explore, create, and transform the relationship between humans and machines. These were some of the key takeaways.
Key insights from the session
> The convergence of art, science, and technology. From technological to interdisciplinary innovation.
The MIT Media Lab once again demonstrated its DNA: the most relevant innovation emerges at the intersection of disciplines. When designers collaborate with engineers, artists with data scientists, or humanists with technologists, new opportunities for value creation arise.
> Immersive experiences as a new language. From consuming content to living experiences.
One of the recurring themes was the role of immersion—through XR, VR technologies, and sensory interfaces—as a new way to communicate, learn, and experiment.
> AI as a tool for creative amplification. From tool to capability enhancer.
Several speakers highlighted artificial intelligence as a co-creation tool, a driver of artistic exploration, and an amplifier of human capabilities. AI does not replace creativity—it expands it.
Featured speakers
The level of the speakers was outstanding. Among the sessions, we would particularly highlight:
Prof. Pat Pataranutaporn
His research lies at the intersection of artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction. He works on next-generation systems focused on human well-being, applying insights from psychology to AI and analyzing its impact on people.
Prof. Behnaz Farahi
A designer and researcher at the MIT Media Lab who works at the intersection of fashion, architecture, and interactive technology, exploring more empathetic relationships between the human body and its environment through emerging technologies.
The MIT Media Lab Immersion Session in Barcelona was a statement of intent.
“The future will be experiential, innovation will stem from the hybridization of disciplines, and the most relevant technology will be the one that amplifies what is human.”
Many thanks to Jordi Albó and Esteve Vilella from Lighthouse DIG for the invitation. Events like this help broaden perspectives, identify trends, and inspire new ways of addressing present and future challenges.
Congratulations on the organization!
